Marylouise's Beauty Regimen for Black Girls with Dark Knees and Melanated Gums, 2018

Wilde Gallery Spencer Art Building, Williams College

A durational performance in which I examine and confront my lighter-skinned maternal grandmother’s “recommendations” to improve my appearance by scrubbing my feet, knees, elbows and gums with a variety of household materials: epsom salts, cornmeal, lemon juice, toothpaste, baking soda while a audio of my mother's voice recites her own mother's cruel statements play loudly in the room.
